SATSIS was founded in 2005 as a result of pioneering technology from the Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems School of Engineering and Electronics (IMNS) at the University of Edinburgh. This technology enables precise location information in areas where there is no or inaccurate GPS satellite data such as indoors or in tight urban areas.

Since receiving initial development funds from Scottish Enterprise under their Proof of Concept program, SATSIS was formed to commercialise the Loc8R product. Its technology is based on software algorithms which uses all available location data − whether GPS, A−GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth or Loc8R proprietary software − to create accurate and fast location information. Loc8R is available as a software enhancement for several applications and markets such as Device OEMs and end user applications for mobile devices.
